Life in Carrabelle revolves around the water. Fishing, boating, and time on St. George Sound and the Gulf are central, supported by a working harbor and seafood traditions. The town's museums, lighthouse, and the famously tiny police station give it a distinctive local character, and the pace is slow and unhurried. Residents and visitors prize the Forgotten Coast's natural, undeveloped shoreline and the sense of a place that has kept its small-town, working-coast identity.

Carrabelle's public schools are part of Franklin County Schools, the district serving this small rural county. As in much of the Panhandle, the district is small and community-scaled, with families across the county drawing on shared campuses for elementary, middle, and high school. Higher education is available within driving distance in Tallahassee, roughly 50 miles to the northeast, home to several colleges and universities.

U.S. Highway 98 runs along the coast through Carrabelle, linking the town eastward to Apalachicola and westward along the Panhandle, while U.S. Highway 319 connects it north to Tallahassee. The drive from Tallahassee is roughly 54 miles and typically takes a little over an hour. The nearest large commercial airport is in Tallahassee, about 48 miles to the northeast, serving as the main gateway for regional air travel.

Carrabelle Beach fronts St. George Sound, and the surrounding waters support boating and Gulf fishing. The Crooked River Lighthouse, built in 1895, can be climbed for views over the sound, river, and marshes, with a keeper's-house museum at its base. Other draws include the Carrabelle History Museum, the Camp Gordon Johnston World War II Museum, and the World's Smallest Police Station, with St. George Island and Apalachicola a short drive away.
