Gateway to the Ocala National Forest

Apartments in Fort Mc Coy, FL

Welcome to Fort McCoy, a rural Marion County community between Silver Springs and the Ocala National Forest in north-central Florida.

Fort McCoy is an unincorporated community in northeast Marion County, Florida, about 20 miles east of Ocala and roughly 30 miles south of Gainesville. It lies west of the Ocala National Forest, directly north of Silver Springs, and between the small neighboring communities of Sparr and Eureka along County Roads 315 and 316. The area is part of the Ocala metropolitan region but feels far removed from it, defined by pine woods, wetlands, and open rural land. The community's name reaches back to the Second Seminole War. A stockaded frontier outpost, originally known as Fort McKay (also spelled MacKay), was constructed in the late 1830s to protect settlers, and the settlement that grew around it later took the name Fort McCoy. That frontier past, together with the surrounding forest and springs, gives Fort McCoy a distinctly Old Florida character. Life here is oriented around space and the outdoors rather than commercial centers. The Ocala National Forest, one of Florida's largest federal forests, lies immediately to the east and provides miles of trails, springs, and hunting and fishing grounds. Silver Springs, long among Florida's best-known natural attractions, sits just to the south. Residents tend to value privacy, larger properties, and access to nature, and the community attracts a mix of long-time local families, outdoor enthusiasts, and those seeking a quiet, self-reliant lifestyle within reach of Ocala and Gainesville. The broader Marion County region is internationally known for its Thoroughbred horse farms, and elements of that equestrian culture reach into the rural areas around Fort McCoy, where pastures, paddocks, and country roads remain a common part of the landscape.
