Greenacres is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, in the inland suburban corridor west of Lake Worth and Lantana and east of Wellington. It occupies about six square miles and is home to roughly 44,000 residents, making it the eighth-largest of the county's 39 municipalities. The city was incorporated in 1926 as Greenacres City, created to provide housing during a period of rapid growth in Palm Beach County. In 1990, voters approved dropping the word "City" from the name, and the municipality became simply Greenacres. That history left a mature, built-out community with established neighborhoods rather than the newer master-planned developments found farther west. Greenacres is a dense, family-oriented suburb where most residents own their homes. It is part of what locals call inland Palm Beach, a chain of working and middle-class neighborhoods stretching west from Lake Worth through Wellington and Royal Palm Beach. The city grew from a single-lane Jog Road and one elementary school into a community of nearly 45,000, and that build-out is visible in its mature, tree-lined streets. Recreation and education anchor daily life. Okeeheelee Park, bordering the city, spans more than 1,700 acres with trails, lakes, and sports facilities, and the community center offers programming for youth, adults, and seniors. Public schools are part of the School District of Palm Beach County, with John I. Leonard High School, the county's largest, located in Greenacres. For residents, Greenacres offers an established, convenient base in inland Palm Beach County, close to parks and schools and a short drive from the coast, at a scale and pace that feel rooted rather than resort-driven.
