Marianna is the county seat of Jackson County, in the Florida Panhandle's northwest corner, a short distance from the Alabama and Georgia state lines. The city of about 7,000 residents serves as the governmental, educational, and commercial hub of a largely rural county, and its location along the Chipola River and U.S. Highway 90 has defined its role since the nineteenth century. Downtown Marianna retains a small-town, southern character, with shops, restaurants, and historic buildings framing the county courthouse. The city is anchored by two institutions of regional importance. Chipola College, a public college, has been part of Marianna for more than seventy-five years and offers academic, cultural, and athletic programs, including four-year degree options. Jackson Hospital provides the area's principal medical care, and the Jackson County School District maintains its headquarters in the city, serving students across the county. Marianna's best-known natural attraction is Florida Caverns State Park, just north of town, where visitors tour limestone caves and enjoy trails, camping, and the Chipola River's springs and paddling. The park's caverns were developed in the 1930s with Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration labor as part of the New Deal. The city's history includes a significant Civil War chapter. On September 27, 1864, Union cavalry engaged Confederate defenders in the Battle of Marianna, a raid that left landmarks and a self-guided trail through the downtown area. Today Marianna balances its role as a government and college town with its position as a gateway to outdoor recreation along the Chipola River and the region's rural countryside. Interstate 10 passes south of the city, linking Marianna to Tallahassee to the east and Pensacola to the west, while U.S. Highway 90 continues to run through the historic center.
