Mount Plymouth is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Lake County, Florida, situated between Mount Dora to the west and Sanford to the east, within the Orlando–Kissimmee metropolitan area. Its story begins with the Florida land boom of the 1920s, when a group of investors purchased roughly 5,000 acres and laid out a planned golf resort community centered on the Mount Plymouth Hotel and Country Club. The community was envisioned as a year-round retreat for figures from the sports and business worlds, and its golf course, built in the mid-1920s, ranks among the oldest in Florida. The hotel itself no longer stands, but its legacy shaped the community that remains, and the Mount Plymouth Golf Club continues to operate. Today Mount Plymouth has a population of about 4,400 and functions as a mostly residential community with a mix of long-established homes and newer construction. State Road 46 carries traffic through the center of the community, connecting it to Mount Dora about seven miles west and Sanford about 17 miles east; Tavares, the Lake County seat, lies about 12 miles west. The Wekiva Parkway, a major toll corridor, passes to the south and east. The community sits in a gently rolling, lake-dotted section of central Florida near the Wekiva River basin, giving it a more wooded, elevated feel than the flatter terrain found to the south. That higher, hillier landscape — unusual by central Florida standards — was part of what drew the original resort developers and still defines its character today. Mount Plymouth offers a quieter, small-scale alternative to the busier Orlando-area suburbs while keeping Mount Dora, Sanford, and the greater Orlando region within easy reach.
