Lake County Rural Crossroads

Apartments in Okahumpka, FL

Welcome to Okahumpka, a small Lake County community between Leesburg and the Green Swamp, where rural quiet meets Turnpike access.

Okahumpka is a small, unincorporated community and census-designated place in the western part of Lake County, Florida, about three miles southwest of Leesburg and near the Sumter County line. With a population of roughly 240, it is one of the quieter corners of a county better known for its chain of lakes and fast-growing retirement communities. The name itself speaks to the area's landscape: it is generally translated from a Native American term as "deep waters," referring to a spring of unknown depth near the original townsite, or as "single lake," a nod to the region's many waterways. The community has deep roots. In the mid-nineteenth century, after the Seminole era, Okahumpka grew into a small town provisioned by steamboats that traveled through the chain of lakes and the Ocklawaha River. That river trade ended when a railroad trestle was built too low for the boats to pass, and around 1898 the town relocated about a mile and a half to the new railroad depot, with the spelling settling from "Okahumpkee" to "Okahumpka." Those layers of steamboat and railroad history remain part of the area's identity, preserved in local historical accounts and nearby sites such as Bugg Spring. Today Okahumpka is a rural crossroads rather than a town center. County roads link it to U.S. Route 27, which leads north into Leesburg, and to the Florida Turnpike a few miles to the west, where the Okahumpka Service Plaza carries the community's name onto one of the state's busiest highways. The surrounding countryside remains a mix of pasture, woodland, and scattered homes. Okahumpka offers a genuinely country setting with the practical advantage of quick access to Leesburg, the Villages area, and the broader Central Florida road network, a combination that defines its low-key appeal.
