Historic Sumter County Seat

Apartments in Sumterville, FL

Welcome to Sumterville, a small unincorporated community in central Sumter County, Florida — a former county seat along Interstate 75, near Lake Panasoffkee.

Sumterville is a small unincorporated community in central Sumter County, Florida, near Lake Panasoffkee and the Interstate 75 corridor. It shares its name with the county, both honoring General Thomas Sumter, a South Carolina hero of the American Revolutionary War known as the "Carolina Gamecock." Sumterville has deep local history. It was among the earliest settled points in the county, with its first post office established in 1854, and it served as the Sumter County seat during the nineteenth century. That role ended when the county courthouse burned in 1909 and voters moved the seat to Bushnell, where the county's government remains today. A railroad spur once ran directly into Sumterville, connecting the community to the regional rail network, though that link was abandoned by the 1930s. Today Sumterville is best known as a crossroads. Interstate 75 runs along its western edge, and Exit 321 marks the Sumterville and Lake Panasoffkee interchange. The CSX rail line still passes through, and County Road 475 provides local access. The community's position roughly midway between Ocala to the north and Tampa to the south, and near Florida's Turnpike and The Villages, places it amid some of Central Florida's most dynamic growth. Sumterville itself remains lightly developed, a mix of homes, small businesses, and rural land rather than a formal town. Lake-Sumter State College operates a campus here, anchoring an educational presence, and Sumter District Schools serve local students. Residents value the area's affordability, central location, and access to both Lake Panasoffkee's outdoors and the services of Bushnell, Wildwood, and The Villages.
