Rich Valley Suburb East of Tampa

Apartments in Valrico, FL

Welcome to Valrico, a Hillsborough County suburb east of Tampa known for quiet neighborhoods, larger lots, strong public schools, and easy access to Alafia River State Park.

Valrico is a census-designated place in Hillsborough County, Florida, located about 15 miles east of downtown Tampa and just south of the Brandon retail corridor. With roughly 40,000 residents, it is a mature eastern suburb of the Tampa Bay area that has grown steadily from a rural, agricultural past into a landscape of single-family subdivisions, larger residential lots, and community amenities. The name Valrico, meaning 'rich valley' in Spanish, replaced the settlement's earlier designation of Long Pond in the late 19th century. The community's growth tracks the broader suburban expansion of eastern Hillsborough County. Once defined by citrus groves, pasture, and scattered farms, Valrico transformed over the late 20th and early 21st centuries as subdivisions filled in along State Road 60 and its feeder roads. Today the area offers a mix of established neighborhoods with mature trees and 1990s-to-2000s construction, plus newer developments, giving buyers a range of ages and styles without the density of closer-in Tampa neighborhoods. State Road 60 (Brandon Boulevard/Adamo Drive) is Valrico's commercial spine, carrying residents west to Brandon's shopping, dining, and medical facilities and onward toward downtown Tampa. I-75 and the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway provide regional connections, and commuting into Tampa's job centers typically falls in the 20-to-35-minute range off-peak. Hillsborough Area Regional Transit bus service offers limited public transit along the main corridors. Schools are a defining feature. Valrico is served by Hillsborough County Public Schools, and the community anchors several well-regarded campuses including Bloomingdale High School, opened in 1987, along with neighborhood elementary and middle schools. Families frequently cite school boundaries and the area's established suburban feel as reasons for choosing Valrico. Outdoor recreation draws on the community's edge-of-countryside position. Alafia River State Park, a roughly 6,300-acre former phosphate mine turned recreation area, lies a short drive southeast and is known for some of Florida's best mountain-biking trails, while Lithia Springs, Alderman's Ford, and Edward Medard parks add springs, paddling, and fishing. For many residents, Valrico balances suburban convenience, strong schools, and quick access to preserved open space.
