Lakeside Town Near Gainesville
Apartments in Waldo, FL
Welcome to Waldo, a small lakeside city in Alachua County where Lake Alto and Lake Santa Fe anchor outdoor life and the U.S. 301 corridor puts Gainesville within an easy drive.
Waldo is a small city in Alachua County, Florida, located about 15 miles northeast of Gainesville where U.S. Highways 301 and 24 meet. With a population of roughly 1,000 and an area of just over two square miles, it is one of the more compact municipalities in the region, offering a quieter, small-town alternative to the university-centered pace of Gainesville. The community is the second-oldest town in Alachua County. Known as Bellamy Station in the 1820s and as Fort Harlee during the Seminole War, it took the name Waldo and grew into a genuine rail town when the Florida Railroad, later part of the Seaboard Air Line, began stopping there in the late 1850s. That railroad heritage remains visible in the community's identity, including a restored red caboose displayed in town and a historic depot that still functions as an Amtrak Thruway bus stop. Waldo's setting is defined by water. Lake Alto and the larger Lake Santa Fe lie immediately to the southeast, giving residents access to boating, fishing, paddling, and swimming within minutes of home. Lake Alto Park, operated by Alachua County, provides a boat launch, picnic areas, a playground, and trail connections into the Lake Alto Preserve. These lakes anchor the city's recreational life and draw visitors from the greater Gainesville area. Beyond the lakes, Waldo's local character is built around small-town gathering places such as the Waldo Farmer's and Flea Market, Waldo City Square, and the Waldo Motorsports motocross track. The city's location on the U.S. 301 corridor places it on a well-traveled route between Jacksonville and Gainesville, which supports a mix of small businesses and gives residents straightforward access to the employment, shopping, and health care of Gainesville, including the University of Florida.
